Moldovan Parliament Supports Withdrawal from CIS

The Moldovan Parliament has supported the country's withdrawal from the CIS.

This was stated in a statement released by the Moldovan Parliament.

The Moldovan Parliament has decided to denounce the relevant protocol of the Commonwealth of Independent States and the organization's charter.

The Moldovan Foreign Ministry initiated the cancellation of the documents. The ministry noted that the fundamental values and principles of the CIS are no longer being fulfilled, and the organization has lost its meaning of existence.

The reason for the decision to withdraw from the CIS was Russia's gross violation of the principle of mutual recognition of territorial integrity and the inviolability of borders.

“This principle, which was the basis for the creation of the CIS, has been violated by the Russian Federation, which is waging war against Ukraine, committed an act of aggression against Georgia, and illegally maintains military forces on the territory of the Republic of Moldova,” the parliament said in a statement.

The withdrawal from the organization will allow the country’s budget to save more than 150 thousand euros annually. This is exactly how much Moldova’s membership contribution to the CIS budget amounted to.
