US says it attacked Iranian military sites, Tehran retaliates with airstrike

The US Central Command said it struck Iranian military sites over the weekend, while Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps said it retaliated by attacking a US base.

The Iranian military sites were hit in retaliation for the downing of a US MQ-1 drone, according to the Central Command.

“U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) conducted defensive strikes this weekend against Iranian radar and drone command and control facilities located in Goruk, Iran, and on Qeshm Island. The pre-planned and targeted strikes on Saturday and Sunday were in response to Iran’s aggressive actions, including the downing of a U.S. MQ-1 drone operating in international waters.

U.S. fighter jets responded quickly and destroyed an Iranian air defense system, a ground control station, and two unilateral attack drones that posed a clear threat to vessels transiting regional waters,” the Central Command said in a statement.

Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps later said it had targeted an air base that the US was using for attacks on southern Iran, but did not specify which base.
