It is necessary to uphold the principles of human dignity and equality when creating media content - Public Defender

The Public Defender of Georgia is responding to the content recently spread in the public space, including humorous media platforms and programs, which, in his assessment, reinforces stigma and discriminatory stereotypes against persons with disabilities.

According to the Ombudsman, freedom of expression is one of the fundamental rights of a democratic society, however, when exercising it, it is important to take into account the possible social impact, especially when the object of expression is vulnerable groups.

The Public Defender notes that humor and media products have a significant impact on the formation of public attitudes and stereotypes, therefore, special importance is attached to the message that a specific media content disseminates and whether it contributes to the strengthening of attitudes that lead to the exclusion and discrimination of specific groups.

According to the statement, overcoming the existing stigma towards persons with disabilities and ensuring an equal social environment is an important obligation of the state and society. In addition, representatives of the media, entertainment industry and other public platforms have a special social responsibility to take into account the possible impact of the content they disseminate on those persons and groups who are historically or de facto in a vulnerable position.

The Public Defender once again calls on public figures and creators of media products to be guided by the principles of human dignity, equality and inclusion when exercising creative freedom.
