Today, the trial of Giorgi Udzilauri, who was arrested on charges of espionage, was held at the Tbilisi City Court. According to TV Pirveli, the parties made introductory statements at today's court session. Also, the prosecution stated that it has evidence, while the defense stated that it does not have evidence.
According to the lawyer of the former head of public relations of "Cartu Group", Beka Guledani, Giorgi Udzilauri still claims innocence.
The human rights defender explains that Giorgi Udzilauri stated in court: "I will not change my position depending on how the trend in politics changes."
"Today was the first session of the substantive hearing. The parties made introductory statements. The prosecution stated that we have evidence. The defense stated that we do not have evidence.
Giorgi, as before, does not plead guilty. He also said that "if I were a spy, counterintelligence would not have arrested me, but would have processed me," and he also said that I do not change my positions depending on how the trend in politics changes.
No one knows what was in this envelope, no money was put there. It is up to the investigation to determine how much money there was, or what it was. Also, there are no encrypted materials in the case," - said Beka Guledani.

Giorgi Udzilauri has been charged under Part 1 of Article 314 of the Criminal Code of Georgia (espionage).
If convicted, the high-ranking official faces up to 12 years in prison.
