The Orthodox Church has known about the Assumption of the Virgin Mary since the time of the apostles.
The ancient Christians held the Virgin Mary in such great respect that they preserved everything that spoke of her life, memorized every word and deed of her, and even brought to us a description of her appearance.
For all Christians, the Virgin Mary was a source of comfort and advice. The Virgin Mary brought to Christians the Gospel, the Immaculate Conception of Jesus Christ, His childhood and entire earthly life. Like the apostles, the Most Holy Theotokos Mary strengthened the Christian Church with her word and prayer.
During one of her visits to Golgotha, the Archangel Gabriel appeared to her and announced that she would soon be transferred to heaven - to a permanent residence. As a sign of this, he gave her a palm branch. Soon the Holy Virgin returned to Bethlehem with three maids and brought this good news. She called John the Theologian to her. After the prayer, the Holy Virgin smelled incense, and John heard a heavenly voice confirming her prayer with an “Amen.” The Mother of God said that this voice foretold the imminent return of the Incarnate and Holy Apostles.
Saint John informed the apostles that the Mother of God was preparing to depart for heaven. The Mother of God called each of the apostles to herself separately, praised their faith and deeds, wished each of them eternal bliss, and prayed with them for peace and the well-being of the whole world.
The third hour began, and the time for the Dormition of the Mother of God arrived. The holy apostles, singing, surrounded the decorated bed on which the Most Holy Virgin Mary rested. She was waiting for her departure and her Son, the Lord, and was praying. Suddenly everything became bright, and from the boundless light the King of Glory Himself, Christ, descended, accompanied by angels, archangels, other heavenly powers, great patriarchs, and prophets. When she saw her Son, she praised him, rose up, and ran to meet him. Christ invited her to His kingdom. Without any bodily suffering, the Most Holy Virgin gave up her soul to her Son and God.
The apostles laid the body of the Holy Virgin in the cave of Gethsemane. In the evening, when the apostles sat down to eat, the Mother of God appeared to them and said: “Rejoice! I am with you forever!”
The holy robe of the Virgin Mary, which is kept with hope and distributed throughout the world, worked and still works miracles.
Christians built a church on the site where the Shroud of the Most Holy Theotokos was kept and in which the holy and fragrant body was wrapped.
The feast of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary is celebrated with great celebration on August 28.
