1829 – Sofio Tsulukidze-Gurieli, Governor of the Principality of Guria (1826-1828).

1907 – Sallie Armand, French poet, laureate of the first Nobel Prize in Literature.

1956 – Otto Schmidt, Russian scientist-mathematician, astronomer, geophysicist. An island in the Kar Sea, a cape on the coast of the Chukchi Sea, and others were named after him.

1822 – Brazil declared independence.

1892 – James Corbett becomes the first world boxing champion.

1909 – Eugene Lefebvre is the first pilot to die in an airplane crash.

1911 – French poet Guillaume Apollinaire is imprisoned on suspicion of stealing the Mona Lisa from the Louvre.

1917 – Supreme Commander-in-Chief General Kornilov revolts and leads the cavalry corps into Petrograd.

1940 – London is bombed by the Nazis during World War II.

1952 – Interpol is established.

1953 – The Plenum of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union elects Nikita Khrushchev as First Secretary.

1986 – Bishop Desmond Tutu, appointed Archbishop of Cape Town, was the first black clergyman of the South African Anglicans.
