After 14 years, we are facing an absolute nightmare – Tazo Datunashvili

According to Tazo Datunashvili, Executive Secretary of "Lelo – Strong Georgia," 14 years after "Georgian Dream" came to power, Georgia finds itself in a dire situation regarding its dependence on Russia, as well as in terms of economic inequality and corruption.

Datunashvili stated that the peaceful transfer of power on October 1, 2012, had inspired hope within society for the creation of a democratic and constitutional state; however, in his assessment, 14 years later, the country is living through an "absolute nightmare." "Fourteen years ago, on October 1st, a very significant event took place: for the first time in post-Soviet Georgia, there was a peaceful transfer of power. This instilled great hope in many of our fellow citizens—myself included—that the country would truly come into its own and become a dignified, democratic, and constitutional state.

Fourteen years later, we are facing an absolute nightmare. It is not merely a nightmare confined to the misfortunes of the nine years that preceded October 1, 2012; rather, it is a nightmare reminiscent of Georgia’s darkest years.

In terms of our dependence on Russia, we are back at the same point we were in the early 1990s. The civil strife stoked by Russia has reached the same level seen in the early 1990s.

Economic inequality rivals not just that of the 'nine-year period,' but again mirrors the 1990s: there are 30,000 to 50,000 people who have amassed colossal wealth in this country, while the rest of the citizenry lives month-to-month, watching prices rise on various products and wondering what..." ...cut back next month in order to survive.

Most importantly, in terms of the scale of corruption and the amount of stolen funds, the corruption we face today is a thousand times greater than during the worst periods in this regard—whether it was the late 90s or the era of 'elite corruption' during the nine-year rule.

We are currently at a catastrophic level, where we are talking about the theft of tens and hundreds of millions of dollars from the state treasury," stated Tazo Datunashvili.
