Sanctions against Ivanishvili and all those responsible are essential. Member states must not wait; the thirst for freedom is stronger than fear—that is precisely why we must act now. This was stated by MEP Rasa Juknevičienė during a debate held yesterday in the European Parliament.
"Some think that Georgia is a lost cause. They say, 'Accept the situation; let’s be realists.' Many thought that we Lithuanians were a lost cause too, but that was not the case. Georgians have not given up. People are still protesting. The majority still desires a European future. That is precisely why our message is important for them today as well. The regime wants to ban opposition parties. It has forced German political foundations to close their offices in Tbilisi." It arrests those who work for democracy and the rule of law. This is not strength; it is fear. By rejecting the will of the Georgian people, the Ivanishvili regime has chosen Russia. Putinism will be defeated. The Putinization of Georgia is doomed. Russia represents the future for no one. Ukraine stands firm and continues to fight. Armenia, too, has made its choice despite pressure from Moscow, so hope is not lost.
That is precisely why we must act now. Sanctions against Ivanishvili and all those responsible are essential. Member states must not wait. The thirst for freedom is stronger than fear. We must support the Georgian people. Glory to Georgia! – stated Rasa Juknevičienė.
Up to 70 Members of the European Parliament from six different political groups have prepared a draft resolution concerning Georgia, titled "Attempts by the ruling 'Georgian Dream' party to ban opposition parties in Georgia."
The authors of the draft resolution include Rasa Juknevičienė, David McAllister, Tobias Cramer, and Małgorzata Gosiewska. A vote on the draft is scheduled for today, October 8.
