Brussels needs to clarify whether it genuinely supports Georgia's European integration or expects political submission from the country first – Levan Makhashvili
According to Levan Makhashvili, Chairman of the Parliament's European Integration Committee, Brussels' policy regarding Georgia has failed and has harmed the European Union's strategic interests.
As Makhashvili stated during the parliamentary plenary session, statements made by Kaja Kallas—the EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy—and other European politicians amount to an admission of this policy's failure.
"It was evident from the very beginning that this approach and attitude were flawed, unfair, and detrimental. Consequently, this attitude must change. Today, the Brussels bureaucracy is swimming against the current, to the detriment of the interests of the majority of EU member states. Now, more than ever, is the time for dialogue rather than isolation," Makhashvili declared.
He added that Georgia has always been—and will continue to be—ready for dialogue based on mutual respect. Makhashvili stated that he hopes representatives of the European Union will also join the dialogue.
"In the meantime, Brussels needs to decide—likely by January or later—whether they genuinely support Georgia's European integration or if they expect political submission from Georgia first," the MP noted.
Makhashvili also commented on an event dedicated to Europe Days held in Kakheti, criticizing the EU Ambassador to Georgia, Paweł Herczyński.
According to the MP, anti-government sentiments were displayed at the event "under a diplomatic guise." He stated that encouraging individuals who—in the view of the government representative—insult Georgians does not demonstrate respect for diplomacy or the Georgian people. "Is this public diplomacy or diplomatic activity? Is encouraging those who insult the people—and dancing to their tune—a sign of respect for Georgians? Is this how they understand diplomacy or love for the Georgian people? You participate in Rtveli—an ancient Georgian tradition—alongside those who insult Georgians, and then you expect to speak to the Georgian population about the EU’s love or goodwill?" Makhashvili stated.
According to him, the only thing government representatives appreciated about the event was that the EU Ambassador "danced well and had a good time."
"Unlike him, his fellow ambassadors—whether in Ukraine or Moldova—certainly do not have the luxury of dancing and merrymaking; I hope this individual, the EU Ambassador, will properly appreciate that fact," Makhashvili said.
