The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Georgia expresses concern regarding recent statements by European Union representatives concerning ongoing legal proceedings in the Constitutional Court of Georgia—this is noted in a statement issued by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The Ministry considers that questioning the legitimacy of the legal proceedings—and pre-judging the judicial process—before the court has examined the case on its merits, constitutes an attempt to exert undue pressure on a constitutional institution and an interference in Georgia’s internal affairs. Respect for the rule of law requires that the court be afforded the opportunity to examine the case independently, in accordance with the Constitution of Georgia and applicable legislation.

The Ministry also notes with concern the statements made and the rhetoric employed by European Union representatives regarding Georgia’s internal political and legal processes; such actions hinder an objective assessment of ongoing developments and impede constructive cooperation between Georgia and the European Union.

The Ministry calls upon all relevant representatives to refrain from statements or actions that could pre-judge ongoing judicial proceedings or be perceived as interference in the activities of independent constitutional institutions, and to uphold the principles of the rule of law, judicial independence, and mutual respect. principles,” the statement says.
