Constitutional Court judges openly display aggression toward the opposition and disregard motions – Irakli Pavlenishvili

According to Irakli Pavlenishvili, Chairman of the Governing Council of the "United National Movement," the Constitutional Court is attempting to expedite the conclusion of the proceedings regarding the potential banning of opposition parties, while failing to grant motions submitted by the opposition.

Pavlenishvili stated that the judges have made aggressive remarks directed at opposition politicians—a fact which, in his view, serves as an indicator of the current state of the judicial system. "The judges of the Constitutional Court are disregarding every single motion and are making highly aggressive statements directed at opposition politicians.

It is evident that they have received instructions to conclude the proceedings quickly, given that they have scheduled hearings for next week as well. As for the current stage of motions, it has become clear that—unlike in the past, when they would at least make a show of granting a motion—they have now completely abandoned any attempt to maintain a 'democratic facade,'" stated Pavlenishvili.

He further assessed that the Constitutional Court judges openly display their bias against the opposition—to an extent that even surpasses the conduct of judges in the City Court.

"We have attended numerous proceedings at the City Court over the past few years. Yet, even there, one does not encounter judges who so openly display such aggression and disdain toward the opposition. It is deeply regrettable how these institutions have been captured and how they have been staffed. Naturally, this is also apparent in the current proceedings," he noted. Pavlenishvili also commented on the appointment of Giorgi Zurabashvili as the Prime Minister’s Special Representative for Relations with Russia.

According to him, this appointment serves as a political signal to Russia, coming alongside the proceedings regarding the potential banning of opposition political parties.

"This is an overt message: the process of outlawing certain political choices has begun, and in parallel, a specific special representative has been appointed. It is a clear signal that Ivanishvili is making overtures to Russia across the board—he intends to align with the Kremlin on all major economic and political fronts, and to adopt decisions that are acceptable and favorable to Russia," stated Irakli Pavlenishvili.
