“The European Union and its Member States extend their warmest congratulations to Georgia on its Independence Day! Georgia declared its independence on 26 May 1918, reaffirming its vision of sovereign and democratic statehood. The spirit of the Declaration of Independence resonates deeply in Georgian society today. Georgia’s history has witnessed a continuous drive for closer ties with Europe. Over the past three decades, the European Union and its Member States have stood by Georgia and remain reliable, long-term partners. Progress towards democratic reforms, the rule of law and the protection of fundamental freedoms remains essential for moving forward on the European path. On this important day, we reaffirm the EU’s unwavering support for Georgia’s independence, sovereignty and territorial integrity, in line with its internationally recognised "At the borders," says the statement published on the website of the European Union Representation in Georgia.
