On April 14, Georgia celebrates the Day of Protection of the Georgian Language, Mother Tongue.
37 years ago, on April 14, 1978, the population of Georgia, together with representatives of the intelligentsia, organized a mass demonstration and opposed the decision of the Soviet Union to abolish the Georgian language as the state language in Georgia.
On April 14, 1978, about 15,000 people marched from Tbilisi State University to Rustaveli Avenue. Other citizens joined the students and representatives of the intelligentsia, and almost 100,000 people gathered on Rustaveli Avenue, and for the first time in the history of the Soviet Union, the communist regime retreated.
This day was established in 1990 to commemorate the events of 1978.
