Ms. Maka, you are responsible for the deadlock in Georgia’s EU accession process, yes, you, as well as the Georgian Dream government, will be held accountable - Giorgi Sharashidze

Gakharia for Georgia MP Giorgi Sharashidze addressed the Minister of Foreign Affairs Maka Bochorishvili at the plenary session of the Parliament and held her responsible for Georgia’s EU accession process.

According to the MP, instead of assessing the progress achieved by the country, attention should be paid today to the problems in the areas of democracy, human rights and the rule of law. According to him, the current government and the Minister of Foreign Affairs are responsible for the “deadlock” in the EU integration process.

Sharashidze noted that the Georgian Dream should be held accountable for why Georgia suspended the EU accession process and why the obligation stipulated in Article 78 of the Georgian Constitution, which envisages the country’s Euro-Atlantic integration, was violated.

According to his assessment, there is a democratic backsliding and strengthening of authoritarian rule in the country, which is incompatible with the EU’s requirements. The MP also criticized the government’s anti-European rhetoric and the spread of disinformation.

Sharashidze also recalled the statement of the EU Ambassador to Georgia, Pavel Herchinsky, according to which Georgia is further away from EU membership today than it was in 2023, when it received candidate status.

In conclusion, the MP called on the Minister of Foreign Affairs to answer the opposition's questions and explain to the public why "the country is moving away from the European path" and whether the government has the resources, political will, and competence to return Georgia to the EU accession process.
