    Police seize illegal firearms and ammunition in Tbilisi and regions - 14 people arrested

    Officers of the Tbilisi Police, Central Criminal Police Department, Mtskheta-Mtianeti, Imereti, Samtskhe-Javakheti, Samegrelo-Zemo Svaneti and Adjara Police Departments have arrested 14 people on charges of illegal purchase, storage and sale of firearms and ammunition, and two have been exposed.

    As a result of searches of the personal, residential houses and auxiliary storage rooms of the accused by the police, firearms of various models, ammunition and explosive devices were seized as evidence.

    Also, employees of the Central Criminal Police and the Customs Department of the Revenue Service of the Ministry of Finance prevented the import of ammunition and explosives into the country. The police arrested the suspects in the territory of the Batumi Port and the Sarpi customs checkpoint. During a detailed inspection of the vehicles they were driving, two hand grenades, two detonators and about 150 cartridges for various models of firearms were seized. The investigation is underway under Article 236 of the Criminal Code, which provides for imprisonment for a term of up to nine years.
