We have some issues with Georgia, given that the government is not actually taking steps when they say they want to join the EU - Kaya Kalas

The ongoing summit in Yerevan also shows how important the Caucasus is, especially now that there is a war in Iran. We are talking about unity, but also about resilience in the face of the threats we face, - said the EU High Representative, Kaya Kalas, in Yerevan, where the eighth summit of the European Political Union (EPC) is starting.

According to her, Europe is not just geography, it is values, principles.

“It is great to be in Yerevan. We have a meeting of the European political community. Europe is not just geography, it is values, principles. That is why we are very happy to host Canada today to discuss these issues. Of course, the summit in Yerevan also shows how important the Caucasus is, especially now, when there is a war in Iran. We are talking about unity, but also about resilience to the threats we face,” said Kaya Kalas.

Asked how important the Middle Corridor and Georgia are in this geopolitical situation, Kalas replied:

“The Middle Corridor is very important. I mean what we see in the Middle East. Also, everyone is discussing how to diversify trade routes, reduce the risks of closing one trade route. That is why connectivity and these routes are extremely important. Of course, we need to see what we can do in this regard and who our partners are.”

Kalas was also asked about relations between Georgia and the European Union.

“As for relations between Georgia and Europe, if we look at the geography, we can see which countries are here. So, of course, discussions are underway on what we can do in this regard, so that we can move forward with the issue of connectivity of the ‘middle corridor.’ We have some issues with Georgia, given that the government is not actually taking steps when they say they want to join the European Union. We see that they are taking steps in the wrong direction. This also gives us limitations, for example, in terms of allocating funding,” Kaia Kalas noted.
