Representatives of the US State Department to Visit Georgia in May - Maka Bochorishvili
Georgian Foreign Minister Maka Bochorishvili announced that representatives of the US State Department will visit Georgia in May. The Foreign Minister made this statement on the First Channel program “Topic of the Day”.
According to Bochorishvili, Georgia has seen concrete steps from the US, and a number of consultations and meetings have taken place.
"In May, representatives of the US State Department will visit Georgia. Meetings will be planned not only with me, but also with various representatives of the Georgian government. We have seen concrete steps from the US. A number of consultations have taken place, including a call with the Prime Minister, visits to both Washington and Tbilisi. We are expecting further steps and continuation of consultations in May. This can be considered the first stage of consultations in a way. These are the first meetings of this kind with the State Department under the Trump administration. Of course, much depends on how events develop and what the results of the consultations will be. At this stage, we can evaluate the communications and meetings that have taken place with the US side so far as positive and productive, since the visits already planned are a response to this and a continuation of it. In April, a representative of the State Department also visited Georgia. We had consultations, I also had a meeting with him, and meetings were also held with various representatives of the Georgian government. The result of this visit "There was a call between the Prime Minister of Georgia and the Secretary of State. This is the progress that we have in relations with the US. We have also noted this many times, and the Secretary of State also noted in a conversation with me, that the legacy that the Trump administration has inherited in relations with Georgia is not easy, it was not easy to take these steps, even to get this far and start talking. I am glad that this has happened and it has become possible for us to return to the table and continue talking about Georgia-US relations, which is very important," said Maka Bochorishvili.
At the same time, according to her, there is a desire from the US side to reset relations at the highest level.
"Communication with the US is carried out on a daily basis. Our embassy in Washington works on a daily basis and we also see the results of these messages, which were voiced during a telephone conversation with the Prime Minister, that we must work to restore relations. The possibility of restarting strategic cooperation, of course, exists, we must conduct this process correctly. Much depends on the US side itself, what will be the desire to reset relations with Georgia. Based on the calls, meetings and communications carried out so far, we can judge that this desire exists and we hope that we will have a more positive dynamic in relations," Bochorishvili noted.
