Foreign ministers from the 46 member states of the Council of Europe will hold their annual meeting in Moldova today
The foreign ministers of the 46 member states of the Council of Europe will hold their annual meeting in the capital of Moldova, Chisinau, on 15 May, to be opened by Moldovan President Maia Sandu. The press service of the Council of Europe reports.
According to the Council of Europe, the meeting is taking place against the backdrop of significant geopolitical changes, growing pressure on multilateral cooperation and instability in Europe. The ministers will discuss the political priorities and future directions of the organization.
The main topics of discussion will be Russia's aggressive war against Ukraine, including issues of post-war accountability and reconstruction. The Council of Europe's work on migration will also be discussed, following the ministerial meeting of 10 December 2025, which called for the adoption of a declaration reflecting a common European approach.
Ministers will also discuss the new European Pact for Democracy, taking into account the annual report of the Secretary General of the Council of Europe. The agenda of the meeting will include information manipulation and foreign interference, including the protection of the integrity of democratic processes and elections, as well as ways to strengthen democratic sustainability.
Another topic of discussion will be the future foreign strategy of the Council of Europe as one of the main standard-setters and geopolitical players in Europe and the world.
Ministers will also discuss the issues of international cooperation and effective multilateralism, in a context where these mechanisms are facing serious challenges.
An additional protocol to the Convention on Laundering, Search, Seizure and Confiscation of the Proceeds of Crime and on the Financing of Terrorism will be adopted during the session, updating and supplementing the existing instrument.
A signing ceremony is also planned, during which the countries will have the opportunity to accede to several new Council of Europe conventions.
Following the meeting, Moldova will hand over the chairmanship of the Committee of Ministers of the Council of Europe to Monaco.
After the session, a press conference will be held on 15 May, in which the Ministers of Foreign Affairs of Moldova and Monaco and the Secretary General of the Council of Europe will participate.
