    Church Calendar

Apostle Andronicus and Saint Junias (I); Martyrs: Solokon, Pampham and Pamphalon soldiers (284-305); Stephen, Patriarch of Constantinople (893).

Of the 70, the Holy Apostle Andronicus and his assistant in the apostolic work, Saint Junia, were relatives of the Apostle Paul. They worked hard in preaching the Gospel among the Gentiles, which the Apostle Paul also notes in his Epistle to the Romans: “Send greetings to Andronicus and John, my kinsmen and fellow workers, who are among the apostles who were in Christ before me.” Saint Andronicus was ordained bishop of Pannonia, but his and Saint Junia's preaching went far beyond his diocese and reached other countries.

In the 5th century, during the reign of Emperors Arcadius and Honorius, the holy relics of these saints were discovered in the suburbs of Constantinople near the Eugenia Gate, along with the holy relics of other martyrs. Then the Lord appeared to the God-fearing Nicholas the Calligrapher and told him that among the other 17 martyrs there were also the holy relics of the Apostle Andronicus. Later, a magnificent church was built on that site.

Saint Father Stephen, Patriarch of Constantinople, was the younger son of Emperor Basil of Macedon and the half-brother of Emperor Leo the Wise. He received the priesthood during the reign of Patriarch Photius. When Patriarch Photius was forced to leave the patriarchal chair in 886, Saint Stephen was appointed patriarch. The high priest vigilantly guarded his spiritual flock. He was a merciful and compassionate person, caring for widows and orphans. He himself was distinguished by his holy life and extreme asceticism. High Priest Stephen died peacefully in 893. He is buried in the Sikelia Monastery.
