UN General Assembly adopts resolution on status of internally displaced persons and refugees from occupied regions of Georgia

The UN General Assembly has adopted a resolution “On the status of internally displaced persons and refugees from Abkhazia, Georgia and the Tskhinvali region/South Ossetia, Georgia”.

The Georgian Ministry of Foreign Affairs has reported this.

According to them, 107 countries supported Georgia’s resolution at the 2026 session.

As Georgian Ambassador to the UN, Davit Bakradze, stated in his speech to the Assembly, the main goal of the draft resolution is to address the dire humanitarian situation of refugees and internally displaced persons who have been forced to flee their homes as a result of waves of ethnic cleansing.

“It is a great honour to address the General Assembly once again on behalf of the hundreds of thousands of internally displaced persons and refugees who have been forcibly displaced from the occupied regions of Georgia, Abkhazia and South Ossetia. I stand before you at the rostrum today to receive the requisite support for the General Assembly resolution. The main objective of this draft resolution remains unchanged, which is to address the grave humanitarian situation of refugees and internally displaced persons who have been forced to flee their homes as a result of the waves of ethnic cleansing that began in the 1990s and culminated in the full-scale military aggression against Georgia in August 2008. Since its first adoption in 2008, this resolution has enjoyed growing support from the international community, as evidenced by the number of supporting voices and The number of co-sponsoring countries is constantly growing. Today, the draft resolution is co-sponsored by 67 UN Member States from all regions of the world, which is a clear demonstration of a common commitment to universally recognized principles. First of all, this is respect for the right of return, protection of property rights and a call for a peaceful resolution of the conflict,” said Davit Bakradze.
