Commemoration of the Venerable Nicetas the Confessor, Bishop of Chalcedon (IX); Holy Hieromartyrs: Eutyches, Bishop of Melitina (I) and Hellas (XII); Holy Martyr Elikonidas (244).
Venerable Father Nicetas the Confessor, Bishop of Chalcedon lived in the second half of the 8th century. For his God-fearing life, he was appointed Bishop of Chalcedon. High Priest Nicetas was distinguished by great mercy. During the reign of the iconoclastic Emperor Leo the Armenian, the high priest boldly exposed the heresy of the iconoclasts and day and night exhorted his flock to reverently venerate the icons of Jesus Christ, the Most Holy Theotokos, and all the God-bearing saints. For this reason, Nikita endured many persecutions and harassment from the iconoclastic Emperor and his fellow heretics. Saint Nikita the Confessor died at the beginning of the 9th century. Miracles of healing were performed from his holy relics.
The holy Hieromartyr Hellas, Bishop, was thrown into the fire for confessing his faith in Christ, but, by God's providence, he survived unharmed. In prison, the Lord Jesus Christ Himself appeared to the holy Hieromartyr and healed his wounds.
