Of the Venerable Isaac the Confessor, Abbot of the Dalmatian Monastery (383).
The Venerable Father Isaac, the Dalmatian Confessor, after being tonsured a monk, lived in the desert. During the reign of Emperor Valens, who was a zealous follower of the Arian heresy, persecution of Orthodox Christians began; churches were closed or destroyed everywhere. When Saint Isaac learned of this, he left the desert and went to Constantinople.
At that time, the barbarian Goths, who lived on the banks of the Danube River, came to fight against the Roman emperor. Soon they conquered Thrace and marched towards Constantinople. When Emperor Valens was leaving Constantinople with an army to fight the barbarians, Saint Isaac shouted loudly to the emperor on horseback: “O king, open the doors of the temples to the Orthodox, and then the Lord will come to you!” But the emperor paid no attention to the monk’s prophetic words. When the saint’s prophecy was fulfilled, immediately after ascending the imperial throne, Theodore the Great invited the monk to his palace and received him with great honor. The emperor expelled the followers of Arius from Constantinople and returned the temples to the Orthodox Christians. The saint was given a monastery on the outskirts of Constantinople, where a new monastery later arose, the abbot and spiritual leader of which was the venerable Isaac.
The saint died in 383.
