A joint venture registered in Turkey has won the tender for the design and construction of a tram line connecting Didi Dighomi metro station with Didube, Tbilisi Mayor Kakha Kaladze announced at today’s session of the capital’s government.

"You know that we had a pre-election promise to implement a historic project. I have in mind the tram line. Many statements have been made in this regard. We also announced a tender, where international and foreign companies also had the opportunity to participate in the project. I would like to provide you with information regarding this. As you know, the tender announced under the Asian Development Bank's procurement rules for the design and construction of the tram line connecting Didi Dighomi to Didube metro station was opened on March 31 of this year. Four large companies and joint ventures expressed their desire to participate in the tender and submitted relevant proposals, including three registered in Turkey and one registered in China. The evaluation of the submitted proposals has already been completed, and we have the winning company, a joint venture registered in Turkey, which submitted the lowest price. In accordance with the ABD procurement rules, the so-called "A 14-day appeal period, after which we will sign an agreement with the winning company," said Kakha Kaladze.

According to the Mayor of Tbilisi, the project will consist of three stages: preparation of a conceptual design, preparation of a detailed design and construction works. All three stages have a duration of 36 months from the signing of the agreement.

The tram line will start from the area adjacent to the merger of the third and fourth microdistricts of Didi Digomi and will connect to the area adjacent to the Didube metro station through Davit Agmashenebeli Alley and Digomi Massif.

"The approximate length of the tram line is 7.5 kilometers, where 11 stops will be located along the entire route. The project also includes the arrangement of an appropriate depot, which will be designed for the maintenance and operation of 11 tram vehicles. In parallel with the construction of the line, a separate tender will be announced for the purchase of 10 tram vehicles, work on this is underway," Kaladze said.

According to him, this is a very important project.

“I am personally very happy that such an important public transport, such as the tram, will return to the city. I hope that this will not be the first and last project that the Georgian government, the capital city government, will implement. I would like to thank all those who were involved in the preparation of the project, who worked hard, starting with the vice-mayor and ending with each ordinary employee. It is really very important for our people to implement this project and we will gradually provide the public with detailed information about the work,” said Kakha Kaladze.
