To the Georgian people who really want the European path, my message is – do not lose hope, act accordingly, – Estonian Foreign Minister Margus Tsahkna told journalists in Luxembourg ahead of a meeting of foreign ministers.
According to him, Europe will remain open to Georgia.
“I am very sorry that the Georgian regime is following a completely different path, not the path to the European Union. My message to the Georgian people who really want the European path is – do not lose hope and act accordingly, because the experience of Armenia has shown that if the people want it, it is ultimately possible to hold democratic elections and the path to the European Union will be opened. So do not lose hope, because Europe will remain open to Georgia,” Margus Tsahkna said.
When asked, “Now that the Hungarian veto has been lifted, are you considering sanctions against Georgia?”, Margus Tsahkna replied:
“Yes, we are considering sanctions against Georgia, as well as against some individuals. Estonia has presented a fairly long list of sanctions adopted at the national level. We hope that this pressure will eventually work, but it is not up to the EU to decide what the Georgian people will do, it is up to them. We Estonians realize that the situation is difficult.”
