Pentecost is the popular name for the feast of the coming of the Holy Spirit, while Martvilia is the ancient name for the feast of the Descent of the Holy Spirit, which was invariably mentioned in liturgical books from ancient times until their printed editions (18th-19th centuries). The term “Martvilia” shows that on this day there was a testimony (Greek “martvilia”) of the divine nature of Christ, since the promise given to the disciples by Him about the coming of the Holy Spirit in a short time was fulfilled (Acts I, 4-5). Churches built in the name of the Descent of the Holy Spirit were formerly called the "Church of Martvili" in Georgia. The city of Martvili in western Georgia, where this church was built (7th century), got its name from the Great Cathedral of Martvili. Later, the church was consecrated in the name of the Assumption of the Mother of God.
