The Venerable Father George of Mtatsminda was born in 1009 in Trialeti, into a noble family. His mother's name was Mariam, and his father's name was Jacob.

When the child was seven years old, his parents sent him to the monastery of the temple nuns, where his sister Thecla was also growing up. There, Saint George spent three years, and during that time God miraculously saved him from death twice.

In 1019, at the request of his uncles, Giorgi the Writer and Saba, who worked in the Khakhuli Monastery, he became a disciple of the famous monk Hilarion Tualeli.

In 1022, Saint George was sent to Constantinople, where he diligently studied the sciences for 12 years and received a versatile education.

In 1034, Giorgi, returning to Georgia, was tonsured a monk at the Khakhuli Monastery, later he traveled to Palestine. Then he went to the Simeon Sakvirvelmteli Monastery on Sakvirveli Mountain. There he chose the Georgian monk Giorgi Shekveli as his spiritual guide, and then, with his blessing, went to the Iveria Monastery on Mount Athos. On the way, he also visited Jerusalem and prayed at the Tomb of the Savior. George arrived in Athos in 1040 and continued translating the Holy Scriptures. In 1044, he was elected abbot of the Iverian Monastery on Mount Athos.

George the Holy One was constantly thinking about the future of the Georgian nation. At the invitation of Bagrat IV-ÉÓ, George arrived in Georgia, selected 80 talented young men and traveled with them to Athos. On the way, he became ill and the saint peacefully gave up his soul to the Lord. This happened in 1065. His body was respectfully transferred to Athos. During his repose, Georgians were visited by many miracles.
